Top Knot Tour Day 3: Pattern hack

Oh I can’t believe it’s the third and final day of the 3 Day/ 3 Theme Top Knot tour already so what better way to kconclude then with pattern hacks and honestly, hand on I love this awesome pattern by Chalk and Notch

The Top Knot romper, dress & tunic is so stylish with it’s detailed box pleats on the shoulders and the options for short or long sleeves along with tunic, dress, maxi or romper bottoms makes for a very versatile pattern. In addition to this, the pattern is so professionally drafted with proper notches and markings (that I was almost overcame with tears of joy …okay maybe not the tears part but definitely the joy … can you tell I love my notches?) If that didn’t blow your socks off, the detailed instructions surely will. Seriously, they are so well written you would sew one up in no time (I kid you NOT) as I was one of the privilege testers for this.

This was my original tester’s version in a nice soft flowy voile and silk combination … can you guess what my inspiration was? A bit of Roman holiday? Versace perhaps? Or was it basking in the sun on a luxury cruise? Hmmmm

So when Gabriela asked if anyone would like to join her on this tour, how could I possibly say NO and the opportunity to hack the pattern just sealed the deal (I’m not usually a rebel … or maybe just a little *shhh* don’t tell anyone LOL)

With my thinking cap on, I decided a two piece outfit would totally rock and since my daughter prefers comfort over style, she’s bound to love it (or so I hope).

For the top, I opted for a knit version in short sleeve even though it’s FREEZING here at the moment (hence the layered top) but I wanted her to be able to wear it in warmer weather not just now, plus I wanted to add black cuffs for contrast. To do this, I cut the front bodice on a fold omitting the placket. For the neckline I created a binding finish in the same fabric since I already had contrasting cuffs.  I also decided to add a band on the hemline with side splits to make it more fun to go with this Toucan print by Elvelyckan which I purchased from Fabric Finder

For the pant, I found the most gorgeous crepe knit to create a soft, drapey pair of pants using the romper pattern pieces and extending the waist to create a ruffled waistband. I’m hoping this pant will take her through to spring and cool summer nights as well.

Now wasn’t I right about this being a versatile pattern or what 🙂

I’ve also just taken some indoor pictures of how the top can be worn for summer (can’t wait)

  2. Your two versions couldn’t be more different, and they couldn’t be more fantastic!! I love how chic the dress is and how cool and fun the separates are! I think I would wear those two styles myself, actually, hahaha. Kidding. Okay, not. 😉
